Sumo Tape vs. Duct Tape
Henkel, the makers of Duck brand duct tape has introduced Sumo Tape, a "heavyweight" cousin of regular duct tape. What does this mean for our old favorite?
Is Sumo Tape better than duct tape? In an official press release, Henkel says, "Three layers give Loctite Sumo Tape its power. A super thick polyethylene film gives the tape its water resistnace. . .an expertly stiched fiber layer give the tape strength. . . a third layer of thick adhesive gives the tape its powerful grab." Duct tape is a cloth backing, a polycoating, and adhesive. So Sumo Tape is duct tape--just thicker, stronger, and stickier than run of the mill duct tape. But it is nothing new. Tape companies have been producing stronger, thicker, stickier duct tape for years for an industrial applications. Do people buy it? Sometimes, but for most applications it is not worth the extra money for the extra strength because usually, standard duct tape is strong enough.
